Digital Patterns

The work Digital Patterns is an exploration of the aesthetics and implications of digitally developed camouflage patterns used in an increasingly digitalized warfare. Each square on it shows a unique camouflage pattern that was created using a fractal generator.

The patterns on the carpet refer to the standardized designs developed for camouflage clothing and military equipment in different countries and are now archived in the digital database camopedia.org. By matching the camouflage patterns with pictures or videos with the patterns in the database camopedia.org Bellingcat can trace troop movements, equipment and possibly even the involvement of military units in atrocity crimes. Regarding digitalized warfare Multi-Scale Camouflage has become the standard. It can be used in various distances, since the pattern is based on fractals and is repeated on a small and large scale.

The work was part of the exhibition On Methods — Bellingcat and Artistic Research in Düsseldorf.
